Distribution of Hygiene Kits to 200 households in the North East

On 24 June 2020, the Universal Disaster Recovery Foundation (U-DIREF) distributed hygiene kits to some 200 vulnerable households in the Sabon Gari I and II IDP Camp of the Northeast state of Borno. With women between the ages of 23 and 60 as the main beneficiaries, the hygiene kits were intended to assist in hand-washing during the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the world.

In the sidelines of the distribution exercise, U-DIREF staff in the Northeast also carried out public health awareness on the prevention of the spread of COVID-19, while responding to issues or questions raised by participants and beneficiaries.

Despite the inability to maintain physical and social distancing during the distribution exercise, the sensitization was a huge success due mainly to support and collaboration by the camp chairman and some of the Bulama (Traditional leader) and opinion leaders. While in the field, we found out that the needs were overwhelming and we could not meet all of them due to insufficient funding.

It is worthy of note that most populations in the northeast are vulnerable, not only as a result of the Covid-19 lock down but also as a consequence of the Boko Haram insurgency in the state, which has displaced many families and rendered most communities deserted.
